it takes time to achieve something great…

So much effort goes into a decade of fitness and lifestyle habits.  Everyday we take another step towards a healthier lifestyle.  Whether it’s another workout or a wise food choice.  Each small effort becomes the sum of one large effort.

We have to keep chipping away at our big goals – after all most big goal require the same amount of attention as our small goals.  Just like the big blockbuster movie Avatar this weekend

(10+ years in the making) our bodies require a ton of effort and work to maintain.  Prioritizing your health is super important if you are going to live the best life.  Day by day we have to chip away at our health, making our bodies stronger and healthier.  Nothing happens overnight, some goals take 10+ years to achieve (just like a Blockbuster movie).  And some things like our health require the combined sums of our small efforts – each and everyday.

So never back down, don’t let your health get away from you and prioritize yourself…

Remember, what’s more convenient for you?

Friday – at last (and a change)

We’ve all been there – After a few months of training the results seem to slow down.  Pat yourself on the back first of all – cause I’m sure it wasn’t easy to start back at it (and stick with it for a few months might I add).

You have made a huge change and this is why your body changed.  But unless you add another change your body just isn’t going to go any further.

Seeing the fat melt and the muscles strengthen is an awesome feeling.  If you are going to continue to improve your health and appearance you have got to change something else.

Start here —-

Your DIET – have you looked at that lately or are you still eating the same food you ate before you started investing time into your body?  Nutrition is 80% of the equation.  The workout regimen can only take you so far.  The next step is to change those eating habits.

Your DAY TO DAY ACTIVITY – If you haven’t started walking as much as you can and climbing every staircase you see then you are missing out.  For the holidays – PARK AS FAR AWAY FROM THE MALL AS POSSIBLE  (silly I know, but this stuff adds up).

CONDIMENTS – next time you’re out and need some food.  Maybe the closest resturant is McDonald’s.  Make it healthy and ditch the sauces  This can double the calories in some foods.

Have a killer weekend — watch out for those weekend food traps and keep yourself busy.

Set the rules

Many of us want to indulge once in a while and with the holiday season upon us we have more and more opportunity to do so.

It’s totally okay to enjoy yourself – your body and mind do need a break from a strict nutrition regimen (notice I didn’t use the D-word).

But you have to set the rules.  Lay down the ground work now so that when the time comes you will not be tempted.  For instance – Christmas day is definitely going to be a cheat day for many of us.  Schedule this day now as a cheat day and eat healthy the rest of the time.  You should feel GUILT FREE about this.  As long as you are working hard toward your goals 80-90% of the time you will have no problem scheduling the odd cheat day.

Aim for the days over the holidays when you know you are most likely to break down and indulge.  The rest of the time – jump right back on your nutrition regimen and AVOID THE JUNK.  Be sure to drink plenty of water and stay focused on the task at hand.

If you do “accidently” have a slice of pie – then cut yourself off right there.  Jump back on board and forget about it!

Keep moving forward and stay healthy,

Matt Bradbury

P.S.  If you’re looking for the Holiday Fat-Loss Solution – TrainMeFit has it.  Monday, November 30 – January 6, 2010

All the Bootcamp you want for only $150 (regularly $247.50)

Add some fiber

Fiber is super important in your diet!

But on the label it always lists two types: soluble and insoluble. What is the difference?

The Insoluble type of fiber will bind water in your body and help keep your colon healthy. This type of fiber moves food along in your digestive tract. You will find this type of fiber in whole wheat grains, vegetables, and fruits.

The soluble type of fiber forms a gel when it meets water. This one will lower your cholesterol since it steals the bile acids away from your body. You can find this type of fiber in oats, barley, fruits and vegetables.

Just remember – if you increase your fiber intake you should increase your water intake as well. Shoot for 25 grams a day if you are a women and 38 grams a day if you are a man! You will feel full longer and be on your way in no time to a healthier you.
*of course: you should always consult your physician before making drastic changes to your diet*

No Machines Necessary

Do this now

This is an absolute must if you are having trouble sticking to your healthy eating plan.

You need to have your meals prepared for the week!

Packing snacks and meals for the week is a necessity for any healthy lifestyle. It does take some motivation and hard work but it is worth it in the end.

Spend the time setting aside snacks such as almonds, apples, trail mix, and yogurts so that you are ready for the week. A good time to do this would be after you grocery shop.

If healthy food is hard to get – you definitely will not be eating it.  Make your snacks within reach and eating well will be that much easier.
No Machines Necessary

Next time you are at the gym please avoid The Leg Extension Machine. This machine places a lot of added stress on your knee. You have all that weight placed at your ankles adding up to a lot of torque at your knee joint.

The machine also focuses all your efforts at only one joint! This means you are going to work fewer muscles and therefore burn less calories.

You are much better off implementing some squats or lunges into your routine. These exercises allow you to use more muscles (Glutes, Hamstrings, Quads, and Calves) and burn more calories. Plus you will be lifting heavier weights compared to what you would with the Leg Extension Machine – this means you are going to add more muscle to your body and thus burn even more calories at rest.

The most important bonus – the knee joint itself is going to get much stronger doing compound exercises like the squat compared to knee extensions.

Over the Long Run

There is no secret to losing body fat. You cannot cut out a whole food group and expect your body to be healthy. Cutting carbohydrates for instance will only restrict healthy foods you should ideally be eating. If you are looking to lose a few pounds try cutting 100 calories away from your daily intake. Chances are you will not notice any difference in your hunger. 100 calories is the equivalent of only 1 tbsp. of butter – this could make you 10lbs. lighter over the course of a year (condiments can really add up)!

Simple modifications such as the above and exercising 2-4 times a week will have you healthier in no time! Remember – this is a lot less stressful than using the “Die-t” method… but you have to be in it for the long run.

(notice how the word diet is simply “die” with a “t” on the end — that even sounds intense)
